'Move to Improve' is the theme for World Arthritis Day 2011 / 2012
Our 'Move to Imrove' photo gallery is packed full of inspiring pictures and stories sent in by people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) who have found ways to be physically active. View the pictures and find an activity that motivates you to move to improve.
Most of the pictures in the gallery were entered into our 2011 'Action Shot' photo-competition. The competition is now closed, but you can still upload a picture of yourself participating in a physical activity or sport into the viewing gallery. Please add a short quote about how the activity or sport helps you and inspire others with similar challenges.
Twelve of the pictures from the Action Shot photo-competition were selected to be featured in the EULAR 2012 calendar. The front cover of the calendar is taken from an original artwork donated to EULAR by Israeli artist, Ilana Yaron. You can download and print off the English version of the calendar.
We are preparing a speical 2013 template for national organisations to use
to create and customise their own version of the calendar. The template will include awide selection of the pictures in the gallery, so each organisation can choose which pictures they want to feature in their version.
What sort of picture should I send? What should I write?
Photographs should be inspiring and clearly show you performing the activity, exercise or sport
Each photograph should be accompanied by a short statement (no more than 100 words) in English describing how the activity has improved your life
We need high quality photographs – minimum requirement 1mb when open
The clarity and artistic value of the photograph will be considered in judging
Photographs that are not of sufficient quality may not be included in the gallery
Inappropriate photographs will not be posted.
Here are some of the different types of activities you might want to show:
Water activities: Swimming, aqua-aerobics, sailing, canoeing etc.
Indoor activities: Gym, exercise classes, dancing etc.
Calm / meditative activities: Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi etc.
Outdoor activities: Walking, bicycling, riding etc.
Team sports: Football, netball etc.
Adventure activities Skiing, climbing, abseiling etc.
Everyday activities: Playing with your children, walking the dog, gardening
How to enter your picture into the gallery
Provide a digital photograph of yourself participating in a physical activity, form of exercise or sport and write a short statement about why this activity improves your life with a rheumatic or musculoskeletal disease and benefits you.
Make sure your photograph is of good quality. Photographs should be at least 1mb and provided in JPG or GIF in RGB file format. Photographs should not be over 5 mb. (Tip: It might be possible to compress photos when saving them as a JPEG)
Complete the entry / consent form and post your picture and quote online.
Pictures should show you, the person with the rheumatic or musculoskeletal disease.
If possible, ask a family member, friend or colleague who has some experience of photography to take a picture of you.
Tips
Before you take your picture, here are some considerations:
Try and keep your picture simple so that people can see clearly what you are doing
Make sure you are sufficiently in the foreground to be seen
You may need to ‘arrange’ the composition of the picture to get the best effect
Try to make the picture look active and natural, rather than posed, even if you have had to ‘arrange’ the composition
Consider the background of your picture – if this is too busy then it may distract from what you are doing
Think about the colours you are wearing and make sure they stand out from the background
If other people are involved in your picture make sure you have their consent to use their photograph
Make sure there is enough light in the picture
You may need to use flash if you are taking your picture indoors
If the camera has one, use the facility to remove ‘red eye’ when using flash
Your picture will inspire and motivate other people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases, so make sure you are smiling!
Remember, a picture can speak a thousand words…
